Case History - A court for the environment and the community

This sports court in the suggestive setting of the 17th Century convent of San Nicola da Tolentino (NA) was produced with the Confosport PM flooring system and is an excellent example of how important values like the environment, urban redevelopment in a historical area, and the community may come together in a single important project, creating a perfect and practical sports court.

Environmental values are represented by the fact that the court has a deck in SBR rubber granules produced from recycled End-of-Life Tires; urban redevelopment is represented by the fact that the space in which the court was produced was a degraded area that had lost the functionality and aesthetic quality that the environment deserved; the community aspect is represented by the fact that the scenario is that of the famous Terra dei Fuori (the Land of Fire) and that the works are part of a social integration and recovery project developed by the Association “L'altra Napoli”, for young people and the redevelopment of the Quartieri Spagnoli (Spanish Districts). The Confosport PM system the solution offered for the comfortable, high performance playing surface requested, with a deck that was irregular with rising damp and that could not be repaired with traditional methods due to work site logistic problems.

Project:

Location: San Nicola de Tolentino Convent - Naples

Dimensions: approx. 600 sq.m.

System: Confosport PM

SBR rubber ELT granules used: 5,000 kg

Colours: Casali Red 102
The different project steps and results are shown below.

Step 1. The first step consisted of smoothing the concrete deck to remove loose parts and irregularities.

Step 2. A first layer of black SBR rubber granule mixture with variable controlled grain size, bound by the single-compound polyurethane resin Athlon 45, in order to ensure a perfectly smooth mixture and uniform physical-mechanical characteristics. The 10 mm layer was then laid with a PLANOMATIC type vibratory finishing machine with heated vibrating screed, to ensure perfect compacting of the membrane and millimetre control of the thickness. The connections between the section were applied with fresh product layer upon layer to ensure perfect adherence and eliminate the joints.

Step 3. Hardening of the deck deck in SBR rubber granules.

Step 4. The surface was produced with the special synthetic resin Comfort Coating applied in layers with a rubber squeegee . Finally, the lines were marked in with Pitlinea, the special paint for sports courts lines.
